Who Owns Volvo? Geely, AB Volvo and a Shared Name (2026)

Who Owns Volvo? Geely, AB Volvo and a Shared Name (2026)

Who owns Volvo depends on which Volvo you mean. Volvo Cars, the maker of the XC90, XC60 and EX30, is 78.65% owned by Geely Sweden Holdings, a subsidiary of China’s privately held Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, which is controlled by its founder Li Shufu (also known as Eric Li).

The remaining 21.35% of Volvo Cars trades on Nasdaq Stockholm. Volvo trucks, buses and construction equipment belong to a separate company, AB Volvo (Volvo Group), whose largest voting shareholder is the Swedish investment firm Industrivärden.

Two companies, one badge, and a trademark both of them own half of. That’s the whole puzzle.

Key takeaways

  • Geely Sweden Holdings owns 78.65% of Volvo Cars’ shares and the same share of votes. AMF, a Swedish pension firm, is next at about 3.5%.
  • AB Volvo (Volvo trucks, Mack Trucks, Renault Trucks, Volvo buses) is separate: Industrivärden holds 28.2% of the votes and Geely Holding 14.7%.
  • The VOLVO name sits in Volvo Trademark Holding AB, owned jointly by Volvo Cars and Volvo Group.
  • Geely’s Volvo Cars stake was worth about $15 billion at the 2021 IPO. At the October 23, 2026 valuation, it’s worth roughly $2.4 billion.

Who owns Volvo Cars in 2026?

Geely Sweden Holdings AB holds 78.65% of Volvo Car AB’s shares, and its share of the votes is the same (Millistream shareholder data, October 2026). With more than three-quarters of the votes, Geely can elect the board on its own.

Geely Sweden Holdings is wholly owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, a private company based in Hangzhou. Geely’s own press releases call Li Shufu the group’s founder and principal owner, and he also chairs the Volvo Cars board.

The next-largest holders are Swedish institutions: AMF with about 3.5% and Folksam with about 2.3%. The rest is spread across funds and retail investors.

One detail trips people up. Geely Holding, the private parent, isn’t the same as Geely Auto, the Hong Kong-listed carmaker behind the Geely, Zeekr and Lynk & Co brands. Geely Auto doesn’t own Volvo Cars; both sit under the same parent.

Day-to-day, Volvo Cars is run by Håkan Samuelsson, who came out of retirement in 2025 on a two-year contract. The board has already named his successor: Klaus Zellmer, who ran Škoda, takes over no later than October 1, 2027 (Volvo Cars, September 2026).

Volvo Cars vs Volvo Group: same name, different owners

Volvo started in Gothenburg in 1927 as an offshoot of bearing maker SKF. The car business stayed inside AB Volvo until 1999, when AB Volvo sold it to Ford so it could concentrate on commercial vehicles.

AB Volvo’s ownership works differently. Its A shares carry ten times the votes of its B shares, so an investor holding mostly A shares controls far more votes than its capital stake suggests. Industrivärden owns 9.6% of the capital but 28.2% of the votes; Geely Holding owns 4.4% of the capital and 14.7% of the votes (Millistream data, October 2026). You’ll find a similar capital-versus-votes gap in who owns Ferrari.

So is Volvo Trucks part of Geely? No. Geely is a large minority shareholder in AB Volvo, which publishes its own owner list on its investor relations page. In India, Volvo trucks and buses run through VE Commercial Vehicles, which bought Volvo’s Indian bus business in 2020 for ₹100.5 crore.

The name belongs to neither company outright. The VOLVO trademark is held by Volvo Trademark Holding AB, which Volvo Cars says is jointly owned by Volvo Cars and Volvo Group. That’s how a Geely-controlled carmaker and a Swedish truckmaker can wear the same badge.

Is Volvo fully Chinese-owned?

No, but control is Chinese. Geely holds just under four-fifths of Volvo Cars, and Swedish pension funds, other institutions and retail investors hold the rest. The head office and most product development are still in Gothenburg.

Geely Holding is a private company, not a state-owned enterprise. When it bought Volvo in 2010, Geely said it funded the deal with money from Chinese institutions, its own balance sheet and international capital markets.

What has changed since 2025 is how hard Volvo leans on its parent. Under Samuelsson, Volvo became the European distributor for Lynk & Co, moved all Polestar 3 production to its South Carolina plant and tied its supplier base more closely to Geely’s (Reuters, March 31, 2026). At that month’s annual meeting, Li told shareholders that a carmaker working in isolation is heading for obsolescence.

Then came the third quarter. Volvo Cars reported an operating loss of SEK 3.7 billion, announced about 2,500 more job cuts (2,000 of them in Sweden) and said six of the 13 models it plans by the end of the decade will be designed for China (Volvo Cars and Reuters, October 23, 2026).

My take: the shareholder register hasn’t moved since 2023. The real shift is operational. Volvo still runs its own design and safety engineering, but its China models, supplier base and parts of its factory plan now run through Geely more than at any point since 2010.

Who has owned Volvo, and what it was worth

Year Event Figure What the number measures
1999 Ford buys Volvo Cars from AB Volvo $6.45bn Price including about $2.9bn of Volvo Car debt (Ford 1999 annual report)
2010 Geely buys Volvo Cars from Ford $1.8bn $1.3bn cash at closing plus a $200m note, before adjustments (Ford SEC filing)
2021 IPO at SEK 53 a share About $15bn Geely’s roughly 82% of a SEK 158bn valuation
2026 Shares hit a record low after Q3 results About $2.4bn Geely’s 78.65% of a SEK 29.8bn market value (Bloomberg, Oct 23)

Here’s the math behind the last row. Bloomberg put Volvo Cars’ market value at SEK 29.8 billion on October 23, 2026. Geely’s 78.65% of that is about SEK 23.4 billion, or roughly $2.4 billion at that day’s Reuters rate of SEK 9.918 to the dollar.

That’s about one-sixth of what the stake was worth on IPO day, and only around 30% more than the $1.8 billion Geely paid Ford 16 years ago. Adjust for US inflation since 2010 and the gain likely disappears.

Treat it as a rough check, not a return calculation. The 1999 price includes debt, Volvo raised about SEK 20 billion of new money at its IPO, Geely sold 100 million shares for roughly $350 million in November 2023, and Volvo passed most of its Polestar stake to Geely Holding in 2024. The share price also moves every trading day.

Do Volvos use Ford engines?

Not anymore. During Ford’s ownership, smaller models such as the S40 and V50 shared Ford’s compact-car platform and some of its engines, and Ford kept supplying powertrains and parts for a transition period after the 2010 sale.

Volvo launched its own Drive-E four-cylinder engines in 2013. Today its combustion engines come from Aurobay, part of Horse Powertrain, a joint venture owned 45% by Renault, 45% by Geely and 10% by Aramco. The engine in a new Volvo has Geely ties, not Ford ones.

Who owns Volvo and Volkswagen?

Different owners, with no shared controlling shareholder. Volkswagen AG is controlled by Porsche Automobil Holding SE, the Porsche and Piëch family holding company, with 53.3% of the voting rights; the German state of Lower Saxony holds 20% and Qatar Holding 17% (Volkswagen Annual Report 2025).

The only real link in 2026 is a person: Volvo Cars’ next CEO comes from VW’s Škoda. For a carmaker where a rival does hold a stake, see who owns Mazda.

Where are Volvo cars made?

Ownership and factory location are separate questions. Volvo Cars builds cars in Torslanda (Gothenburg), Ghent in Belgium, Ridgeville in South Carolina, and Chengdu, Daqing and Taizhou in China, with a new plant coming in Košice, Slovakia. Volvo Car India assembles cars locally near Bengaluru.

For US buyers, Ridgeville is the plant to watch. It builds the EX90 and, since March 2026, every Polestar 3. After the Q3 results, Samuelsson told Reuters that tariffs mean Volvo has to build more of its US cars in the US.

Whoever sits on the share register, your warranty, recalls and parts still come from Volvo Cars’ local company in your country. The ownership question matters more to the long-term product plan than to the car in your driveway.

Frequently asked questions

Is Volvo owned by the Chinese government?

No. Volvo Cars’ controlling shareholder, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, is a privately held company whose founder and principal owner is Li Shufu. It operates under Chinese law and used financing from Chinese institutions for the 2010 purchase, but it isn’t a state-owned enterprise.

Can I buy shares in Volvo?

Yes. Volvo Cars trades on Nasdaq Stockholm as VOLCAR B, though Geely’s 78.65% stake leaves a free float of about 21%. Volvo Group, the truck and bus maker, trades in Stockholm as VOLV A and VOLV B. US investors usually reach both through over-the-counter listings or brokers with Nordic market access.

Does Geely own Polestar?

Largely, yes. Volvo Cars passed most of its Polestar stake to its co-founder Geely Holding in 2024. Under a debt-to-equity plan announced in March 2026, Volvo Cars’ own stake rises to about 19.9%. Polestar trades on Nasdaq in New York under the ticker PSNY.
