Jack Ma’s net worth is estimated at between $25.4 billion and $44.9 billion as of late October 2026. Forbes put the Alibaba co-founder at $25.4 billion on October 29, 2026, while the Bloomberg Billionaires Index had him at $44.9 billion on October 30, 2026.

That’s a gap of nearly $20 billion, and neither tracker made a typo. They count his cash and his slice of Ant Group very differently.

Key takeaways

•Forbes: $25.4 billion (Oct 29, 2026), No. 95 in the world. Bloomberg: $44.9 billion (Oct 30, 2026), No. 46.
•Bloomberg says cash from years of dividends and share sales is Ma’s single biggest asset, which explains most of the gap.
•His last disclosed Alibaba stake is about 4% (February 2022 filing), and he holds no management role.
•He bought more than HK$600 million (about $76.5 million) of Alibaba stock in August 2026, Bloomberg reported.

Why Forbes and Bloomberg are $19.5 billion apart

Bloomberg is unusually open about its math. Its profile says most of Ma’s wealth is accumulated cash from dividends and from selling Alibaba and Ant shares over the years. It credits him with 4% of Alibaba, based on a February 2022 13D filing, and 9.9% of Ant Group, based on Ant’s 2020 IPO prospectus.

For Ant, Bloomberg averages two values: $78.5 billion from Ant’s 2023 share buyback and $50 billion from a Bloomberg Intelligence report in December 2025. That average is $64.25 billion, so a 9.9% stake works out to roughly $6.4 billion.

Run that through and Ant accounts for only about 14% of Bloomberg’s total. The rest is Alibaba stock plus cash, and Bloomberg says cash is the larger piece. He has sold plenty, too: Reuters reported in July 2020 that he’d cut his Alibaba stake to 4.8% over the prior year, shares worth about $9.6 billion at the time.

Forbes doesn’t show an asset-by-asset split on his profile, so its cash assumption can’t be checked line by line. But a gap this size almost has to come from cash. Bloomberg treats past sale proceeds as still sitting in his accounts; Forbes evidently credits far less of it.

My take: treat $25 billion as the floor and $45 billion as the ceiling. If you need one working figure, the midpoint is about $35 billion.

How did Jack Ma get so rich?

Ma was a Hangzhou English teacher whose first job paid $15 a month, according to Bloomberg. He saw the internet on a 1995 trip to Seattle, ran a couple of early web ventures, and in 1999 started Alibaba.com with $60,000 pooled from 18 co-founders.

Yahoo’s cheque. In 2005 Yahoo paid $1 billion for a 40% stake in Alibaba Group. In 2012, Ma agreed to pay Yahoo $7.1 billion for half of it. That implies the whole group went from about $2.5 billion to about $35.5 billion in seven years.

The 2014 IPO. Alibaba raised $25 billion in New York in September 2014, the world’s biggest IPO at the time. Ma’s paper stake became sellable, and he has been trimming it ever since.

Alipay and Ant. In 2011 Ma moved Alipay out of Alibaba into a company he controlled, arguing Chinese regulators wouldn’t license a foreign-owned payments firm. Alipay grew into Ant Group, the source of his second big stake.

Underneath sits the model. Taobao and Tmall host other merchants’ shops rather than selling their own stock, the marketplace setup explained in our guide to types of business models. Bloomberg says the group booked 996 billion yuan ($138 billion) of revenue in the year to March 2025. That’s company revenue, not Ma’s money.

Why did Jack Ma’s net worth drop?

On Bloomberg’s count, Ma was worth $41.8 billion when he stepped down as Alibaba’s executive chairman in September 2019, Fortune reported at the time. The bigger prize was supposed to come next, from Ant’s record IPO.

Then came October 2020. In a Shanghai speech, Ma criticized China’s financial regulators, and Ant’s listing was halted about ten days later. Ant had been valued at roughly $315 billion at its IPO pricing; its 2023 buyback implied about $78.5 billion, Fortune reported in July 2023, citing Bloomberg.

In January 2023, Ant said Ma would give up control, cutting his voting power from about 53% to around 6%. Alibaba’s share price sagged through the same stretch as Beijing tightened rules on big tech, and by April 2024 Forbes had him at $24.5 billion.

Here’s the odd part of the “before and after” story. On Bloomberg’s cash-heavy method, he’s now above his 2019 level, because cash doesn’t fall when Alibaba stock does. On Forbes’s method, he’s barely above his April 2024 figure and well short of where he stood before the crackdown.

What happened during Jack Ma’s disappearance?

After the speech, Ma largely vanished from public view, fuelling years of rumours. Forbes says he spent about a year overseas before returning to China in 2023. In February 2025 he shook hands with Xi Jinping at a symposium for private-sector leaders, a meeting widely read as a sign the tech crackdown was easing.

Who is the richest person in China, and on Earth?

Not Jack Ma. Hurun’s 2026 China Rich List, published October 28, 2026, put ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming first with CNY670 billion (about $100.5 billion), ahead of Nongfu Spring’s Zhong Shanshan at CNY410 billion ($61.5 billion). Zhang’s wealth rests on ByteDance; our breakdown of who owns TikTok explains that structure.

Globally, Forbes ranked Elon Musk first at $936 billion as of October 1, 2026. For a sense of that scale, see our math on how much money Elon Musk makes a second. On the same Forbes real-time list, Ma sat at No. 95 on October 29, 2026.

Is Jack Ma still the owner of Alibaba?

No. Alibaba is a publicly traded company, and Ma is a shareholder rather than its owner. He handed over the CEO job in May 2013 and the chairman role in September 2019, per Bloomberg.

His last disclosed stake was about 4%, from that February 2022 filing, which Bloomberg says is still the latest available. Shares held through Yun Capital and Ying Capital belong to the Jack Ma Philanthropic Foundation and aren’t counted in his personal wealth.

He’s still buying, though. After Alibaba launched a HK$80 billion share sale in August 2026 to fund its AI spending, Ma bought more than HK$600 million (about $76.5 million) of its Hong Kong-listed stock, Bloomberg reported on August 25, 2026.

That purchase is the clearest clue to where his fortune goes next. If Alibaba’s AI bet pays off, Forbes’s figure will climb fastest, because it leans harder on the share price than Bloomberg’s cash-heavy number does.

FAQ

How old is Jack Ma?

Jack Ma was born in Hangzhou in September 1964, which makes him 62 in 2026. Forbes lists his age as 62 and his residence as Hangzhou, China. He stepped down as Alibaba’s executive chairman on his 55th birthday in September 2019 and hasn’t held a management role there since.

Do Jack Ma’s wife and son have their own net worth figures?

Not from any reliable tracker. Forbes lists Ma as married and counts his wealth as an individual, and Bloomberg doesn’t break out family holdings either. Any website quoting a precise net worth for his son or wife is guessing, so treat those numbers as entertainment rather than data.
