How Much Money Does Elon Musk Make a Second? The 2026 Math

How Much Money Does Elon Musk Make a Second? The 2026 Math

Elon Musk has made about $9,080 a second on average in 2026, based on Forbes figures. His net worth rose from $749 billion on December 19, 2025 to $989 billion at the close on October 21, 2026, a gain of $240 billion in 306 days.

That’s paper wealth, not pay. Tesla doesn’t give him a cash salary, and most of the gain came from SpaceX going public and Tesla’s share price moving. On a bad day the same math runs backwards.

How much money does Elon Musk make a second in 2026?

Here’s the calculation, so you can check it yourself.

• Start: $749 billion on December 19, 2025, per the Forbes index as reported by Reuters.
• End: $989 billion at the close on October 21, 2026, per Forbes.
• Gain: $240 billion.
• Time: 306 days × 86,400 seconds = 26,438,400 seconds.
• Result: $240,000,000,000 ÷ 26,438,400 ≈ $9,080 per second.

Scaled up, that’s about $545,000 a minute, $32.7 million an hour and $784 million a day. If you read this article at an average pace, his fortune grew by roughly $2.8 million while you were reading.

Start a day later or end a day earlier and the answer can shift by thousands of dollars a second. That’s the nature of a fortune tied almost entirely to two share prices.

The per-second figure depends on the window you pick

Every “per second” number online is a choice of start date and end date. Here’s how far apart the honest answers are.

WindowWealth changePer second
Since birth (June 28, 1971 to Oct 21, 2026)$989B total≈ $567
Dec 19, 2025 to Oct 21, 2026+$240B≈ $9,080
SpaceX IPO pricing, June 11 to 12, 2026+$188B≈ $2.18 million (if spread over one day)
First trading hour, Oct 21, 2026+$94B≈ $26.1 million

The lifetime figure is the most stable. The single-hour figure is the most dramatic, and the least useful: it describes one morning when SpaceX jumped more than 10% after beating third-quarter forecasts and Tesla rose ahead of its earnings.

Where the 2026 gains came from

Most of this year’s jump traces to one event. SpaceX priced its IPO on June 11, 2026, raising about $75 billion at $135 a share, and began trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX the next day. It closed its first day valued at around $2.1 trillion. (For the younger rivals chasing it, see our list of aerospace startups to watch in 2026.) Forbes had Musk at about $1.1 trillion that afternoon.

The ride since then hasn’t been smooth.

Dec 19, 2025: Delaware Supreme Court restores his 2018 Tesla pay package. Forbes puts him at $749B.
Jun 12, 2026: SpaceX’s IPO pricing adds about $188B to his Forbes estimate. He becomes the first confirmed trillionaire, at about $1.1T.
Jun 24, 2026: Forbes stops counting $116B of unvested Tesla shares while SpaceX trades about 30% below its peak. Forbes puts him at $962B; Bloomberg has $957B, down $118B.
Oct 5, 2026: A gain of about $65B in one day puts him back above $1 trillion.
Oct 21, 2026: Briefly about $1.019T after a $94B first-hour gain on SpaceX and Tesla, then closes at $989B per Forbes.

Musk’s estimated net worth in 2026, compiled from Forbes figures and contemporaneous reports.

Notice the June 24 drop. Part of it was the market: SpaceX shares had slid about 30% from their post-IPO high. The rest was method. Forbes stopped counting $116 billion of restricted Tesla shares he hasn’t earned yet, as Fortune reported, while Bloomberg’s index showed a $118 billion fall to $957 billion. Per-second math can’t tell the difference between a falling share price and an accounting choice.

Is this income or paper wealth?

Paper wealth. Forbes estimates Musk owns about 38% of SpaceX, with around 85% of the voting power through its dual-class shares, plus nearly 11% of Tesla. When those share prices move, his “earnings per second” move with them.

He also can’t freely cash in. His SpaceX stake is locked up until June 12, 2027, and selling a large block of either stock would likely push the price down. So treat $9,080 a second as a measure of how fast his holdings are being repriced, not money landing in a bank account.

How much money does Elon Musk actually get paid?

His cash pay from Tesla is zero. Musk’s Tesla compensation comes in stock options tied to targets, not a salary.

Two packages matter. The 2018 plan, once valued at $56 billion, was struck down by a lower court and then restored by the Delaware Supreme Court on December 19, 2025, reinstating options worth about $139 billion at the time. In November 2025, Tesla shareholders also approved a new plan worth up to $1 trillion, split into 12 tranches that each need a market value milestone (up to $8.5 trillion) and an operating milestone. One of those operating goals is 1 million robotaxis in commercial service, a market where Alphabet’s Waymo already runs a large paid service (see who owns Waymo).

Tesla’s market value sits around $1.5 trillion as of late October 2026, so most of that new package is still a long way off.

Why the numbers online don’t match

You’ll find figures from under $1,000 a second to $17,000 or more. Three things explain the spread.

Old net worth. Popular articles calculating around $1,000 a second over his career were written when he was worth far less. With his fortune near $1 trillion, the same career math now lands closer to $985 a second from 1995, and that still badly understates 2026.

Different windows. A tracker measuring from a low point, such as early in the year before the IPO, will show a much higher rate than one starting after a rally.

Different trackers. Forbes and Bloomberg value his unvested Tesla options differently, which can move his estimate by tens of billions. Always check which index a figure comes from and on what date. For live numbers, Forbes’ October 21 report shows how quickly his figure moved in a single session.

FAQ

Is Elon Musk a trillionaire?

On and off. He first passed $1 trillion on June 12, 2026, when SpaceX went public, dropped below it by June 24 as SpaceX shares fell and Forbes stopped counting unvested Tesla stock, and has crossed back over several times since. Forbes had him at $989 billion at the October 21, 2026 close, a few hours after he’d briefly topped $1.019 trillion.

How many hours does Elon Musk work?

He has said he regularly works far beyond a normal week, and in a 2018 New York Times interview described weeks of up to 120 hours during Tesla’s production crunch. Even at 120 hours, his 2026 wealth gain works out to roughly $46 million per hour worked, a reminder that it isn’t wages.

The cleanest one-line answer: about $9,080 a second in 2026, around $567 a second across his whole life, and zero a second in salary. Which figure you quote says more about the window you chose than about Musk.
