Anthony Hopkins’s net worth is most often put at about $120 million, the figure Celebrity Net Worth publishes in 2026. That number is an outside estimate, not a disclosure. Neither Forbes nor Bloomberg tracks his wealth, and he has never put a figure on it himself.

So the useful question isn’t “how much,” it’s “how much of that can anyone actually check?” The answer: some big paydays and a run of Los Angeles property deals are on the record. Most of the rest is inference.

Anthony Hopkins net worth: claims vs. the record

Aggregator sites build their totals partly from reported film fees. Here’s how the two biggest fee claims stack up against what major outlets actually printed.

ItemAggregator claimWhat’s on the record
Total net worth$120 million (Celebrity Net Worth, 2026)No Forbes or Bloomberg estimate exists
Hannibal (2001) fee$15 million“More than $10 million” (Time, Oct 2002)
Red Dragon (2002) fee$20 million7.5% of the gross, including an $8 million advance, plus bonuses (Time, October 7, 2002)
Malibu homeNot itemisedBought for about $3.8 million in 2001 (Variety, Feb 2020); sold for $10.5 million (Architectural Digest, Jul 2020)

Notice the pattern. Where a hard number exists, the aggregator rounds it up, and its flat $20 million for Red Dragon doesn’t match the gross-share deal Time reported in October 2002. That doesn’t make $120 million wrong, but it does mean the figure leans on the generous end of every guess. Long Hollywood careers like Jack Nicholson’s raise the same problem: decades of private contracts and very few published fees.

Our read: the documented pieces are consistent with a fortune in the tens of millions. Whether it reaches $120 million depends on six decades of pay and investments that have never been published, so treat that figure as a ceiling-style estimate rather than a fact.

How Anthony Hopkins made his money

Acting is the engine, and it’s a long one. Hopkins won Best Actor for The Silence of the Lambs in 1992, then won again for The Father on April 25, 2021, aged 83. That made him the oldest acting Oscar winner ever, the Irish Times reported the next day.

The Hannibal Lecter role produced his best-documented payday. Time reported in October 2002 that he was paid more than $10 million for Hannibal, a decade after the first film made the character famous. He went on to make Red Dragon in 2002 and keeps working at 88, with Locked reviewed by Variety in March 2025.

In between came The Remains of the Day (1993) opposite Emma Thompson, whose own fortune we’ve broken down here. The London Gazette recorded his knighthood in February 1993, and he became a US citizen in April 2000 while keeping his British citizenship, AP reported.

Property: the clearest money trail

Real estate is the one part of his wealth with public prices. Variety reported in February 2020 that he bought a Malibu home in 2001 for about $3.8 million. Architectural Digest reported it sold for $10.5 million in July 2020.

That’s a gain of roughly $6.7 million on paper, before costs and taxes, or about 2.8 times the purchase price over 19 years.

By then he was buying in Pacific Palisades. Per the same Variety report, he bought a condo there for $1.1 million in late 2016, a new home for $6.6 million in late 2018 and the 1940s Colonial next door for $6 million in early 2019. That’s about $13.7 million of disclosed Palisades purchases in under three years.

Music, books and painting

Hopkins composes, and that side has become a business. Decca Classics signed him in July 2026 and released his album Life Is a Dream on August 21, 2026, according to Decca. He played his first live concert in Riyadh in January 2025.

His memoir, We Did OK, Kid, came out on November 4, 2025, from Summit Books, per Simon & Schuster. No advance has been reported, and neither have the terms of the Decca deal. He also paints, but no reliable sales figures exist.

What did the Palisades fire cost him?

The January 2025 Los Angeles fires hit the most visible part of his wealth. The Washington Post reported on January 11, 2025, that his Colonial home in Pacific Palisades was reduced to rubble.

He and his wife, Stella, were in Saudi Arabia when it burned. In a November 2025 Guardian interview he called it “a bit of a calamity” and said they lost everything. Insurance payouts and land value haven’t been disclosed, so the net hit can’t be calculated from outside.

Where does Anthony Hopkins live today?

In that November 2025 interview, Hopkins said he and Stella were renting in Brentwood, Los Angeles. Fox Business reported in January 2026 that he’d bought a $13 million Palisades house once owned by Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, but I couldn’t confirm that sale through a second major outlet.

How many marriages has Anthony Hopkins had?

Three, according to People (November 2025). He was married to Petronella Barker from 1966 to 1972 and to Jennifer Lynton from 1973 to 2002, then married Stella Arroyave in Malibu on March 1, 2003.

His 29-year second marriage ended in 2002, and its financial terms were never made public. That’s one more reason outside estimates of his wealth are rough.

Why doesn’t Anthony Hopkins talk to his daughter?

His daughter Abigail, from his first marriage, has been estranged from him for years, and Hopkins has only described his side. In 2018 he told The Times, “Her choice is her choice.” In October 2025 he told the New York Times that Stella had sent her an invitation and got no reply.

In his 2025 memoir he writes that he will always be sorry for hurting her and that his door is open. There’s no reliable estimate of Abigail Hopkins’s own net worth, so any figure you see for her is guesswork.

He has also spoken openly about sobriety, marking 50 years without a drink on December 29, 2025. Five decades of steady work after that date is the real foundation of whatever the true number is.

FAQ

How old is Anthony Hopkins?

Anthony Hopkins was born on December 31, 1937, in Port Talbot, Wales, so he is 88 in late 2026. He’s still working: Variety reported he was cast as Charles Darwin in The Species, with filming set for Northern Ireland in June 2026.

What is Mel Gibson’s net worth compared with Hopkins’s?

Forbes doesn’t publish a current estimate for Mel Gibson either. The best-known figure is old: People reported in 2011 that his fortune had been estimated at as much as $850 million, citing a 2006 Los Angeles Business Journal report made before his divorce. Treat it as historical, not current.
